NITROX - Enriched Air Diver
What is Nitrox?
Nitrox (oxygen enriched air) is any mixture of oxygen & nitrogen
where the partial pressure of oxygen is greater than that of regular
air. The most common nitrox mixtures used in recreational diving
are nitrox 32 (32% oxygen & 68% nitrogen) and nitrox 36 (36% oxygen
& 64% nitrogen).
Is Nitrox a new concept?
No! It has been used by the military for over 40 years, by
NOAA for almost 20 years, and by the recreational diving community
for over 10 years.
Can standard scuba equipment be used with Nitrox 32% & 36%?
Yes! As long as the Nitrox is premixed prior to entering the
cylinder, no special cleaning needs to be performed on the cylinder
or the valve. It is highly recommended to get your cylinders
cleaned based on the fact that more Nitrox filling stations use partial
pressure blending which puts O2 in your tank before air. Most
standard regulators can be used with Nitrox mixtures up to 40% oxygen.
Does Nitrox cost more than an air fill?
Yes! The special equipment and processes for filling your tanks
with Nitrox add to the cost of air fills.

Is diving with Nitrox safe?
Yes & No! When using Nitrox with air tables or dive computers
the risk of decompression sickness is reduced; however, due to the
potential for oxygen toxicity, Nitrox mixtures have shallower depth
limitations than air .
Can bottom time increase when using Nitrox?
Yes! No decompression limits are based on nitrogen uptake. When
using Nitrox, as opposed to air, there is less nitrogen uptake at
the same depth.
How much does Nitrox training cost?
We provide certifications for both Nitrox and Gas Blender. Please
call us at 610-678-2688 for details and prices.
What are the prerequisites to take a Nitrox course?
You must be 15 years of age or older and should be comfortable with
your equipment and diving conditions in your area.
When can I sign up for a Nitrox class?
Our Nitrox - Enriched Air Diver
class is held monthly, all year long.
